Historical overview
364-day WordPress.org historyRelevanssi replaces the basic WordPress search algorithm with a configurable relevance-based search engine. It is aimed at sites where visitors need to find content accurately, especially publishers, documentation sites, stores, directories, knowledge bases, and content-heavy WordPress installations.
Quick take
Relevanssi is one of the strongest upgrades to native WordPress search when search quality matters more than keeping the default behavior. The free version already adds partial matching, relevance ranking, better excerpts, search logging, and broader indexing controls. Premium becomes useful for more demanding sites that need features such as PDF content indexing, user-profile search, taxonomy-term search, and additional indexing options.
Best fit: content-heavy WordPress sites where native search misses relevant results.
Free version: yes.
Premium pricing: €120 for an annual unlimited-site license or €402 for a permanent license.
Version reviewed: 4.28.3.
What Relevanssi changes
Default WordPress search is intentionally simple. Relevanssi builds its own index and uses that index to rank results by relevance instead of relying only on the default database query. That opens the door to partial matching, weighting, fuzzy matching, synonyms, custom-field indexing, shortcode-content indexing, and more useful result excerpts.
The trade-off is that better search requires an index. Larger sites need to think about database size, indexing time, and hosting resources. Relevanssi is configurable enough to narrow what gets indexed, which is important when a site has thousands of posts, products, or custom fields.
Features that matter
Relevance-based ranking. Results can be ordered by how well they match the query rather than simply by publication date.
Partial and fuzzy matching. Relevanssi can find useful results when a visitor searches with incomplete words or terms that do not exactly match the stored text.
Custom fields and WooCommerce data. Sites can include important metadata in the search index, which is useful for products, directories, and custom-content setups.
Excerpts and highlighting. Search-result excerpts can show the matching terms in context, helping users understand why a result is relevant.
Search logs and query insight. Administrators can review what visitors search for and use that information to improve content, navigation, or product naming.
Developer controls. Relevanssi exposes filters and configuration options for adjusting indexing, weighting, restrictions, and query behavior on custom WordPress builds.
Free vs Premium
The free plugin is already a substantial improvement over native WordPress search for many sites. It supports relevance ranking, fuzzy and partial matching, comments, shortcode content, custom fields, search logs, and several result-control options.
Premium is aimed at sites with broader indexing requirements. Current premium capabilities include searching PDF and attachment content, taxonomy terms, and user profiles. Relevanssi currently sells an annual unlimited-site license for €120, which includes one year of updates and support, and a €402 permanent license with long-term updates and support. The annual license is not an automatically renewing subscription.
Who should use Relevanssi?
I would consider Relevanssi when search is a meaningful navigation method rather than an afterthought. Documentation libraries, large blogs, publishers, WooCommerce catalogs, directories, educational resources, and knowledge bases are common examples.
For a small brochure site with a dozen pages, the native search or a lightweight live-search plugin may be enough. Relevanssi also deserves resource planning on very large databases because its index can increase storage requirements. SearchWP and Ivory Search are useful alternatives depending on whether you want a premium search platform or a lighter interface-focused approach.
PluginSuggest verdict
Relevanssi is a mature WordPress search replacement with enough control to solve search problems that native WordPress search cannot handle well. The free version covers a large share of real-world needs, while Premium makes sense when attachments, taxonomy terms, user profiles, and broader indexing become part of the search experience.
