MainWP vs ManageWP: Self-Hosted Control vs SaaS Convenience (2026)

Updated September 25, 2026

MainWP and ManageWP can both centralize updates, logins, backups, monitoring and client maintenance, but they put the control plane in different places. MainWP runs the management dashboard on WordPress infrastructure you host. ManageWP runs the dashboard as a hosted service. That architectural choice affects privacy, setup work, billing, backup storage and how an agency scales from a handful of sites to hundreds.

Decision snapshot

MainWP gives you a self-hosted dashboard, unlimited connected sites and flat Pro pricing. ManageWP minimizes infrastructure work and lets you turn paid features on site by site. Compare operational ownership first, then backup/reporting costs.

Self-hosted dashboard vs hosted service

MainWP requires a dedicated WordPress installation for the MainWP Dashboard plus the MainWP Child connector on managed sites. The upside is direct control over the dashboard, data location, API access and hosting environment. The downside is that you are responsible for keeping that dashboard site healthy, secured and backed up.

ManageWP uses its hosted dashboard and the ManageWP Worker connector. There is no management WordPress site for you to operate. For a small team, that removes setup and maintenance work. For privacy-sensitive agencies, it also means the central service and parts of the maintenance workflow depend on an external SaaS rather than infrastructure you control.

Updates, backups and safe maintenance

Both handle bulk WordPress core, plugin and theme updates and passwordless login. MainWP’s free product already covers the core fleet-management workflow, while backup, staging and specialist maintenance workflows often depend on MainWP add-ons or integrations with products such as UpdraftPlus, WPvivid and hosting platforms.

ManageWP includes monthly cloud backup free on unlimited sites. Premium Backup costs $2 per site per month and unlocks daily backup, clone/migrate and Safe Updates. This is a meaningful cost boundary: an agency can keep simple brochure sites on free management and pay only for sites that need stronger backup/update protection.

Monitoring, reports and agency operations

MainWP’s current free feature set includes uptime monitoring, client records and fleet health visibility. Pro adds the deeper agency layer, including branded reports and team-oriented add-ons. Because MainWP Pro covers unlimited websites, reporting and operations become easier to budget as the fleet grows.

ManageWP includes manual client reports, security checks and performance checks in the free tier. Scheduled advanced reports, automated uptime/performance/security checks and white labeling are premium add-ons. For agencies managing mixed-value sites, that granularity can be useful because not every client needs the same care-plan package.

Pricing at 10, 50 and 100+ sites

Pricing checked September 25, 2026. MainWP Essentials is free for unlimited sites. MainWP Pro is $199/year, $29/month or $599 lifetime, with 30+ current and future Pro add-ons included. The cost therefore does not rise simply because another site is connected.

ManageWP’s core remains free on unlimited sites. Premium features are normally billed per website per add-on, such as $2/month for Backup and $1/month for Uptime Monitor. Agencies with more than 25 sites can use bundles covering up to 100 sites, and the current all-in-one bundle is $150/month. This can be cheaper than a full bundle when only a subset of sites need paid features, but more expensive when nearly every site needs the whole premium stack.

Privacy, failure modes and maintenance responsibility

With MainWP, a dashboard outage is your infrastructure problem, but it is also under your control. You choose the host, backup policy, access restrictions and retention. That is useful for agencies with strict data-location or internal-control requirements.

With ManageWP, the control plane is operated for you. That reduces administrative work, but dashboard availability and hosted feature delivery are external dependencies. Neither model is inherently safer; the risk is simply allocated differently. Document who is responsible for the management dashboard, backups and recovery before adopting either system.

Which operating model fits your agency?

Consider MainWP when you want self-hosted control, unlimited-site economics, API/extensibility and a care-plan stack you can customize. It becomes especially compelling when most managed sites need the same premium reporting, monitoring and operations features.

Consider ManageWP when you want the fastest hosted setup, a strong free core and the ability to buy premium capabilities only for selected websites. Before standardizing, price your real fleet: count how many sites need daily backup, uptime, white label and advanced reports rather than comparing entry prices alone.

A 50-site agency cost example

Suppose an agency manages 50 care-plan sites and every site needs daily backup, uptime monitoring, scheduled advanced reports and white labeling. At ManageWP’s per-site list prices, those four paid capabilities total $5 per site per month before bundle discounts. For 50 sites, that would be $250/month. ManageWP’s bundle pricing changes the math materially: the relevant bundles are priced for up to 100 sites, and the current all-in-one bundle is $150/month. MainWP Pro remains $199/year for unlimited managed sites, but that is not an apples-to-apples service total because the agency must still fund its own dashboard hosting and whichever backup, security or monitoring services it chooses to integrate.

This is why the cheaper-looking product depends on the operating model. MainWP concentrates software cost into a flat license and shifts more infrastructure choices to the agency. ManageWP converts more of the stack into a hosted operating expense that can be attached only to sites that need it. For a heterogeneous portfolio, model both the fully loaded care-plan sites and the low-touch sites separately instead of averaging one headline price across the fleet.

FAQs

Is MainWP cloud-hosted like ManageWP?

No. MainWP’s central Dashboard is installed on a WordPress site you host. ManageWP provides the central dashboard as a hosted service.

Can I manage unlimited sites for free with both?

Both allow a very broad free management model. MainWP Essentials explicitly supports unlimited sites, and ManageWP offers its core features free on unlimited websites; paid capabilities are packaged differently.

Which pricing model is easier for an agency to predict?

MainWP Pro is a flat price for unlimited sites. ManageWP can be very economical when only selected sites need premium add-ons, but total cost changes with the number of paid features enabled across the fleet.
