Spectra Blocks and GenerateBlocks both extend Gutenberg, but they approach page building from opposite directions. Spectra gives site builders a wider collection of purpose-built blocks and Pro extensions. GenerateBlocks deliberately uses a smaller set of flexible primitives, then layers advanced styling, dynamic data, global styles and patterns on top.
Decision snapshot
Spectra is broader and more feature-led; GenerateBlocks is more system-led. The decision is whether you prefer ready-made block types or a smaller design toolkit you compose yourself.
Broad blocks vs composable primitives
Spectra includes purpose-built blocks for common marketing and layout jobs, which can shorten the path from blank page to finished section. Its current Pro layer adds builder-style features such as dynamic content, conditions and advanced design controls.
GenerateBlocks keeps the core philosophy narrower. Containers, grids, headlines, buttons, images and query tools are intended to be combined into many layouts instead of replacing every use case with a separate block. This can create a cleaner editor for developers and designers who prefer systems over widgets.
Dynamic data, queries and forms
GenerateBlocks has become substantially more capable in 2026. The free plugin includes query and dynamic-data foundations, while Pro adds more query types, ACF integration, global styles, advanced selectors, forms, overlay panels and conditional behavior. Its Forms feature can connect to services such as Mailchimp, Kit, MailerLite, ActiveCampaign and Brevo.
Spectra also covers forms, post/query layouts and dynamic content through its own block ecosystem. The practical difference is that Spectra exposes more ready-made interface blocks, while GenerateBlocks expects you to build more of the final component from its core primitives and styling system.
Patterns, CSS and agency workflow
GenerateBlocks Pro is especially strong when a team wants reusable global styles, advanced selectors and a large pattern library without adopting a traditional page builder. GenerateCloud can also be added for sharing private pattern libraries across managed sites.
Spectra offers patterns and a more conventional visual-builder experience, and it fits naturally with Astra. Agencies should compare not only design speed but how much custom CSS or reusable styling they expect to maintain across projects.
Pricing and site limits
Pricing checked September 25, 2026. Spectra Pro is $69/year for up to three sites, with a current $319 one-time option. GenerateBlocks Pro is $99/year and the current GeneratePress pricing page allows use on up to 500 managed sites, including client sites you actively manage.
GeneratePress One is $149/year and bundles GenerateBlocks Pro with GP Premium and GenerateCloud. For a freelancer managing many sites, GenerateBlocks can become inexpensive per site; Spectra may be the simpler purchase when only a few installations need Pro features.
Performance and long-term maintainability
GenerateBlocks is intentionally built around a small block set and reusable CSS-oriented design controls. That can reduce editor clutter, but advanced builds may require more design-system thinking. Spectra reduces that effort with more specialized blocks, which can make page construction faster for non-developers.
Neither plugin should be judged by a generic performance claim. Test the actual page you intend to build with the same theme, fonts, images and caching stack. Block count alone does not predict front-end performance.
Which builder model fits you?
Choose Spectra when you want more prebuilt block types and a visual workflow that feels closer to a page builder. Look at GenerateBlocks when you want a restrained block system, global styles, custom CSS control and a license that scales across a large managed-site portfolio.
If your team already uses Astra, Spectra may reduce ecosystem friction. If it uses GeneratePress or prefers utility-like design systems, GenerateBlocks is usually the more natural fit.
Client handoff, styling discipline and lock-in
Spectra can feel faster for non-technical editors because more tasks are represented by dedicated blocks and visual controls. GenerateBlocks rewards a more deliberate design-system approach: fewer primitives, more reusable classes, global styles and patterns. For agencies, this changes how much freedom you give clients after launch. A client who only needs to swap text and images may benefit from GenerateBlocks editor restrictions; a marketing team that builds new landing pages weekly may prefer Spectra’s broader visual toolbox.
Lock-in also looks different. Both store proprietary blocks in post content, but a GenerateBlocks build often relies on a smaller number of repeated primitives while Spectra pages may use more specialized block types. Neither converts automatically to the other. Standardize reusable patterns early so a future migration involves rebuilding a smaller set of components rather than every page from scratch.
Global styles and pattern reuse change the daily workflow
GenerateBlocks’ current workflow is increasingly centered on reusable global styles and patterns. A style can be applied as a shared CSS class across multiple blocks, so changing that style updates every block using it. Its pattern library also separates free, Pro and local reusable patterns. That is a different mental model from choosing a specialized block and styling it independently.
Spectra is easier to approach when editors think in ready-made components such as forms, marketing sections and specialized content blocks. GenerateBlocks becomes more compelling when a team is comfortable defining a small vocabulary of containers, text, media, queries and reusable styles. For larger design systems, that difference affects consistency more than the headline number of blocks.
FAQs
