Wordfence vs Kadence Security: Threat Detection vs WordPress Hardening (2026)

Updated September 25, 2026

Wordfence Security and Kadence Security both protect WordPress logins and vulnerable software, but Wordfence is built around active threat detection while Kadence Security is more centered on authentication, hardening, file-change visibility and attack-surface reduction. Kadence Security is the 2026 rebrand of Solid Security/iThemes Security.

Decision snapshot

Wordfence is the more complete malware-scanning and endpoint-firewall suite. Kadence Security is strongest when the priority is login security, brute-force protection, configuration hardening and vulnerability visibility—especially for sites already buying the Kadence Pro ecosystem bundle.

Best for WordPress sites that want endpoint firewall protection, malware scanning, login security, and active security monitoring from one plugin. WordPress sites that want strong account protection, two-factor authentication, vulnerability scanning, and optional virtual patching.
Not ideal for Sites whose hosting or CDN already provides an overlapping managed security stack, or teams that need managed incident response rather than a self-administered plugin. Sites that only need a simple login limiter or teams expecting a standalone malware-cleanup service.

2026 product positioning is different

Wordfence remains a standalone security product with free, Premium, Care and Response tiers. Its identity is built around its endpoint firewall, malware scanner and threat intelligence.

Kadence Security replaced the Solid Security branding in version 10.0. The free plugin remains available, but new Pro security purchases are currently tied to Kadence’s broader paid bundle rather than a normal standalone Security Pro checkout.

Malware scanning vs attack-surface reduction

Wordfence scans WordPress files for malicious code, unexpected modifications and known vulnerabilities. This is useful after a suspected compromise and for ongoing integrity checks.

Kadence Security does not center its current free product around a full malware scanner. It focuses more on vulnerability awareness, login hardening, file-change detection, firewall/hardening rules and reducing risky WordPress behaviors.

Authentication and brute-force protection

Both cover brute-force protection and two-factor authentication. Wordfence also supports passkeys as of version 9.0. Kadence Security has deep user/login controls and can enforce stronger authentication policies, which is useful for membership or editorial sites with many user accounts.

Vulnerability intelligence and patching

Wordfence maintains its own threat-intelligence and vulnerability data and ships firewall rules as threats emerge.

Kadence Security has vulnerability monitoring and historically integrates Patchstack vulnerability data. Some stronger controls sit in Pro. It should not be treated as a replacement for a dedicated malware-remediation service.

Pricing changed materially after the Kadence rebrand

Wordfence Premium is $149/year for one site.

Kadence Security Free remains free. According to current Kadence support guidance, Kadence Security Pro is presently sold through the broader Kadence Pro bundle rather than as a standard standalone new license. The current Kadence Pro bundle is $299/year and also includes non-security products, so security-only buyers should factor that packaging into the comparison.

Which one fits your stack?

Choose Wordfence when the site needs a dedicated security suite with malware scanning, local WAF visibility and optional managed incident response. Choose Kadence Security when login protection, hardening and vulnerability awareness are the core jobs and the wider Kadence bundle already makes sense for the site.

If you already have host-level malware scanning and a network firewall, Kadence Security can fill WordPress-specific authentication and hardening gaps without duplicating every security layer.

The Kadence bundle can distort a security-only comparison

The 2026 Kadence packaging means a buyer may pay for theme, commerce and membership products just to obtain Pro security features. That can be excellent value for a site already using Kadence products, but poor value for a security-only purchase.

Agencies should separate “security value” from “bundle value.” If Kadence Theme, Shop Kit or Memberships are already in the standard stack, Security Pro may have a low effective incremental cost. If none of those products are needed, Wordfence Premium is easier to evaluate as a dedicated security line item.

Recovery planning exposes the biggest gap

Wordfence can detect malicious changes and its higher service tiers add incident response. Kadence Security focuses more on preventing bad logins and hardening WordPress configuration. If the site is compromised, Kadence users need a documented scanner and cleanup process outside the plugin.

That difference matters for small businesses without technical staff. Prevention controls are valuable, but a complete security plan also needs clean backups, a recovery owner, and a way to verify that malware has actually been removed.

Existing Kadence customers should calculate incremental cost

If an agency already buys Kadence Pro for Shop Kit, memberships or other products, Security Pro may effectively be included in an existing budget. For a site buying security alone, the same $299 bundle can look expensive next to Wordfence Premium. The surrounding product stack changes the answer.

Kadence Security is easier to justify when the surrounding Kadence stack is strategic

The product decision looks very different for an agency that already standardizes on Kadence Theme, Blocks, Shop Kit or Memberships. In that environment, Kadence Security Pro can become part of a broader platform decision rather than a standalone security purchase. For a site that uses none of those products, Wordfence is easier to evaluate because the security spend is isolated and directly tied to firewall, scanning and threat intelligence. Agencies should therefore compare incremental cost, not sticker price: ask what additional amount is being paid specifically to obtain the missing security capability.

FAQs

Is Kadence Security the former Solid Security?

Yes. Version 10.0 changed the branding from SolidWP/Solid Security to Kadence Security.

Can I still buy Kadence Security Pro by itself?

Current Kadence support guidance says new Pro security access is presently sold inside Kadence bundles rather than through a normal standalone purchase.

Which includes a full malware scanner?

Wordfence does. Kadence Security focuses more on hardening, authentication and vulnerability monitoring.
