Paid Memberships Pro (PMPro) is an open-source WordPress membership platform for creating free and paid membership levels, restricting content, collecting recurring or one-time payments, managing members, and extending access rules with add-ons. The core plugin can be self-hosted for free, while paid plans add premium add-ons, official support, and, at the Max level, managed hosting and implementation services.

What Paid Memberships Pro does

PMPro is designed around membership levels and access rules. A site owner can create free, recurring, one-time, trial, or custom-duration memberships, then use those levels to control posts, pages, categories, custom post types, and other protected content. The platform also includes member accounts, checkout, order records, reports, discount codes, email notifications, and payment integrations.

The core is intentionally extensible. PMPro maintains a large add-on library for workflows such as content dripping, member directories and profiles, group accounts, courses, approvals, gifting, sponsored memberships, advanced checkout behavior, email marketing, and other membership operations. This modular approach is useful when a site needs a specific workflow, but it also means the final stack can involve several add-ons rather than one monolithic plugin.

Free core vs Standard and Max

The self-hosted PMPro platform is available for free. That makes it practical for developers, smaller membership sites, and teams that are comfortable configuring WordPress themselves. The free tier already supports the central membership model, so upgrading is mainly about official support, premium add-ons, and managed services rather than unlocking the basic idea of paid memberships.

Distribution note: the current free PMPro platform is downloaded from Paid Memberships Pro directly. Its former WordPress.org listing was permanently closed on October 17, 2024 at the author’s request, so the old directory page should not be treated as the source for current releases.

PMPro Standard is currently $499 per year for one site and includes the premium add-on library plus technical support. PMPro Max costs $999 per year and moves the product toward a managed membership-site service by bundling hosting, email, security, performance work, migration assistance, and implementation help. Max 2x is $2,999 per year and is aimed at higher-volume sites with greater server capacity.

Payments, subscriptions, and membership access

PMPro supports both recurring and one-time membership payments and can be used for free memberships as well. The important architectural point is that the membership plugin controls access while the payment gateway handles the actual transaction. That separation matters when changing gateways or migrating to another membership plugin because active subscriptions, gateway customer IDs, renewal dates, refunds, and access rules may not migrate as one object.

For established sites, payment continuity should be tested before changing membership software. A successful migration needs to preserve not only users and levels but also renewal behavior, cancellation state, trial periods, expiration dates, discount codes, and the rules that grant or remove access after a payment event.

Content restriction and member experience

Content restriction is one of PMPro’s core jobs. Membership levels can be used to protect content and create different access tiers. The surrounding member experience can be extended with profile, directory, account, registration, and community-oriented add-ons. This makes PMPro suitable for publications, associations, coaching programs, private resource libraries, paid communities, and membership businesses that do not need a dedicated LMS as the center of the site.

Where PMPro fits well

PMPro is a strong fit when ownership and extensibility matter. The open-source core gives developers room to customize membership behavior, and the free starting point allows a site to validate its model before paying for the full premium add-on and support package. It is also relevant to organizations that want a path from self-managed WordPress to a more managed membership stack without changing the membership platform itself.

The main trade-off is operational complexity. A heavily customized PMPro site can depend on multiple add-ons, custom code, gateway configuration, email workflows, and bespoke access rules. That flexibility is valuable, but teams should document those dependencies before moving to another plugin or restructuring the site.

Pricing

Pricing checked: September 23, 2026. The self-hosted PMPro platform is free. Standard is $499 per year for one site and includes premium add-ons plus support. Max is $999 per year and bundles managed hosting and implementation services. Max 2x is $2,999 per year for higher-capacity managed sites.

What to check before choosing PMPro

  • Which membership levels, trials, and billing intervals are required.
  • Which payment gateways and recurring subscription workflows must be supported.
  • Whether content dripping, group accounts, directories, courses, or community features require add-ons.
  • Whether the team wants a self-hosted DIY stack or the managed Max service.
  • How much custom PHP, theme logic, or automation will depend on PMPro hooks and membership data.
