WP Mail SMTP
Plugin Health & Stats
Historical overview
364-day WordPress.org historyQuick take
As a WordPress SMTP plugin, WP Mail SMTP focuses on authenticated sending first and adds deeper delivery operations in Pro.
A WordPress SMTP plugin is most useful when you need to replace unreliable default server mail with an authenticated provider.
WP Mail SMTP is a sensible choice when WordPress email delivery matters enough that you want a guided setup, broad mailer support, and a clear paid path into logging, reporting, failover, and routing. The free plugin is enough for many sites that simply need to replace unreliable PHP mail with an authenticated provider.
My WP Mail SMTP review becomes less enthusiastic if you only need basic SMTP credentials and do not value the guided mailer integrations. In that case, a smaller free SMTP plugin can solve the same transport problem with less commercial upsell around it.
Best fit: WP Mail SMTP makes the most sense for sites that need guided SMTP/API setup with a mature upgrade path for email logging, reporting, alerts, routing and failover. It is less compelling for sites that only need one simple SMTP connection and do not need paid monitoring or routing features.
What WP Mail SMTP changes in WordPress
WordPress normally hands email to wp_mail(), which ultimately depends on the server’s mail configuration unless another transport layer replaces it. WP Mail SMTP changes that path so outgoing WordPress messages can use an authenticated mailer or SMTP service instead.
That matters for password resets, WooCommerce order emails, form notifications, membership messages, and other transactional mail where silent delivery failures create real operational problems. The plugin does not make a weak email provider stronger, but it gives WordPress a more reliable way to hand messages to the provider you choose.
Features that matter in a WP Mail SMTP workflow
- Mailer integrations: Lite supports providers including SendLayer, SMTP.com, Brevo, Gmail/Google Workspace, Mailgun, Mailjet, Postmark, SendGrid, SMTP2GO, SparkPost, Elastic Email and Other SMTP. Pro adds mailers such as Amazon SES, Microsoft 365/Outlook and Zoho Mail.
- Setup Wizard: guides the initial connection instead of leaving you with only raw host, port and authentication fields.
- Debug Events: gives visibility into sending errors, which is useful when a form or store says a notification was generated but delivery failed.
- Email logs and reports in Pro: add searchable history, reporting, tracking and operational visibility beyond simple transport configuration.
- Backup Connections: Pro can fail over to a secondary connection when the primary mailer fails.
- Smart Email Routing: Pro can send different messages through different mailers based on rules.
- Alerts: Pro can notify you when sending fails, which matters more on revenue or account-critical email flows.
WP Mail SMTP Free vs Pro
WP Mail SMTP Free vs Pro is mainly a question of whether you need only reliable transport or also need operational controls around that transport. The free plugin already connects WordPress to a useful range of transactional providers and standard SMTP.
Pro becomes easier to justify when you need Amazon SES, Microsoft 365/Outlook, Zoho Mail, detailed email logging, reports, open/click tracking, backup connections, smart routing, or failure alerts. Those features matter more on stores and membership sites than on a small brochure site that sends only a few contact-form notifications.
Where the trade-offs show up
The first trade-off is that WP Mail SMTP Pro pricing is plugin licensing only. Your email provider can still charge separately for sending volume, dedicated IPs, higher limits, or premium account features.
The second is compatibility recency. Version 4.9.0 currently requires WordPress 5.5+ and PHP 7.4+, while the WordPress.org listing is tested through WordPress 7.0.4. That does not mean it fails on newer WordPress versions, but I would verify a critical mail flow after major WordPress or plugin updates.
Finally, the plugin is broader than necessary if you only want raw SMTP credentials. Its strongest case is not simply “SMTP works” but the combination of setup assistance and Pro operational tooling.
WP Mail SMTP pricing
Pricing checked September 9, 2026. WP Mail SMTP pricing currently lists the one-site Pro plan at $39 for the first year, with a regular price of $99/year. Elite is $89 introductory with a regular price of $149 and adds White Glove Setup. Larger Developer and Agency tiers cover more sites.
Provider charges are separate. A Gmail account, SES account, SendGrid plan, SMTP2GO plan, or other delivery service can have its own quotas and costs regardless of the WP Mail SMTP license.
PluginSuggest verdict
My WP Mail SMTP review conclusion is straightforward: it is a strong fit when email delivery is business-critical and you value a mature setup flow plus a paid path to logging, alerts, routing and failover. The free version can handle the core transport problem for many sites.
I would choose something leaner when the requirement is only one SMTP connection and no reporting or fallback workflow. I would choose Pro when missed transactional email has enough cost that monitoring and redundancy are worth paying for.
