Accessibility Checker

Accessibility Checker by Equalize Digital brings accessibility auditing into the WordPress editing workflow. It scans content for detectable WCAG-related issues, explains what needs review and supports remediation without claiming that automation alone can make a site fully accessible or legally compliant.

Accessibility testing inside the WordPress editing workflow

Accessibility Checker by Equalize Digital brings automated accessibility checks into WordPress so editors can find many common issues while they are working on content. Instead of treating accessibility as a one-time external scan, it gives teams an ongoing review workflow in the WordPress dashboard.

The plugin is designed around WCAG-related checks and reports. It can flag detectable problems, explain why they matter, and help an editor identify what needs manual review or remediation. That is useful for teams publishing content frequently because accessibility problems can be introduced long after an initial site audit.

What Accessibility Checker can help find

Automated testing is good at detecting certain classes of problems: missing or suspicious alternative text, heading structure issues, problematic links, form-label concerns, color-related warnings, embedded media concerns, and other patterns that can be inspected programmatically. Accessibility Checker surfaces this information next to the content rather than requiring an editor to interpret a separate crawler report.

The free plugin can scan posts and pages and includes a set of automated fixes for selected issues. It also supports a simplified summary and an accessibility-statement workflow. The Pro product expands coverage and team-oriented remediation features.

What it cannot do

No automated accessibility plugin can prove that a website is fully accessible or legally compliant. Many important questions require human judgment: whether alternative text communicates the right meaning, whether keyboard interaction is logical, whether focus order makes sense, whether instructions are understandable, or whether a custom component works correctly with assistive technology.

Equalize Digital states this limitation clearly, and it is an important reason to view Accessibility Checker as a testing and remediation tool rather than an overlay that promises to solve accessibility automatically.

Where it fits in a real WordPress workflow

The strongest use case is continuous publishing. An organization can build accessibility checks into the same workflow used for editing, review, and content approval. That makes accessibility less dependent on remembering to run an external audit after a page is already live.

For agencies and larger teams, it can also provide a common vocabulary between content editors, designers, developers, and accessibility specialists. Automated findings can be triaged in WordPress, while issues that need manual testing can be escalated instead of being hidden behind a generic “accessibility score.”

Current maintenance and compatibility

Accessibility Checker is actively maintained. Version 1.50.1 was released in September 2026. Recent releases include updates to the front-end highlighter, Elementor-related behavior, zoom and keyboard usability, simplified-summary placement, and fixes for false positives and dynamically rendered content.

The current WordPress.org release requires PHP 7.4 and is tested with WordPress 7.1.2. The plugin’s continued maintenance matters because accessibility testing rules, editor integrations, and WordPress itself evolve over time.

Who should use Accessibility Checker?

It is a strong fit for organizations that want accessibility checks embedded in their WordPress publishing process, especially schools, nonprofits, public-sector sites, ecommerce teams, agencies, and content-heavy businesses where multiple people publish pages.

Sites that only want a visual accessibility toolbar are looking for a different category of product. Accessibility Checker is primarily about finding, understanding, and remediating issues rather than adding a front-end overlay.

PluginSuggest verdict

Accessibility Checker is valuable because it treats accessibility as an ongoing quality process. Its reports can reduce obvious mistakes and make accessibility work more visible to editors, but the best results still come from combining automated scans with keyboard testing, screen-reader testing, design review, and human judgment.
